It's true. The "way of eating" that has been toted so healthy in the midst of our food craze is not all its cracked up to be. I can personally attest to this. While I still agree and follow most of the tenets of the Paleo Diet, I believe there are some major flaws that I'd like to discuss. But before I begin this dissection, I do want to talk about why this diet works for so many people.
Current Western dogma is that eating fat will kills us. Flip through any average "health" magazine at the gas station and they will claim that saturated fats kill, while unsaturated fats are the way to go. They stress keeping the fats low and advocate a high-carb, medium-protein (made up of lean meats for god's sake) for an extremely low fat diet. Ironically, it is in this setting that we have seen a rise in obesity, heart disease, and cancer like none other in the history of human life...
Gary Taubes, author of Good Calories, Bad Calories and Why We Get Fat makes the argument that it's not fat that makes us fat, but the carbs we eat. He states that if everyone ate a high protein and high fat diet and extremely low carb diet, we would lose weight and not have to track ANY calories. I agree, but only to some degree...
