With Spring well on its way, I wanted to take today's post to talk about ways to refresh and revitalize one's life during this time of rebirth in nature. Below I have discussed a few of my ideas for you to de-clutter, de-stress, and truly enjoy one of the best seasons of the year.
Sorry I've been quite absent for a bit, but I have been very busy in the midst of second semester! I have started my independent study and it really is going exactly the way I wanted. We are delving into the philosophy of food which I discuss below. I am so excited because this class will be such a great foundation for my ultimate goal of creating a well-being company. I also cannot wait for my presentation at the end of the year to students at my school and at our local health center. I was speaking to a woman last week about mindful eating, which I wrote an article about a while back, and she gave me this great idea to incorporate it into my speech. I think giving each person a bag of raw almonds would be the perfect way to start out my speech. Have them look at the almond, then pick it up and feel it in their hands, then chew it slowly-- thinking of nothing and staying present-- enjoying each sensation and chewing for at least twenty bites. This would be such a great way to get people into the mindset of my speech and to remind them what a proper food relationship looks like, because we have forgotten.
I cannot believe today is New Year's Eve. Another year has gone by so, so fast. It truly is unbelievable that next year at this time I will be home from college. This winter break has been so relaxing and needed. During this time, I reconnected with family, friends, and myself. I have gotten a lot of work done, but there is still more with finals coming up.
When many people make a new year resolution, it is usually taking something out of their life, maybe junk food or alcohol. But this year, I've decided to focus on adding in wellness to my life. Specifically, I have developed a personal resolution that this next year will be devoted to mindfulness. Throughout this break I have been going to yoga everday and I feel so much better. Cleansed, purified, detoxed. I feel more flexible and I feel strong. And best of all, I feel present. I can hear my breathe and all my smiles and laughs come from a genuine place within my heart. I want this feeling to continue through the New Year. And although I am going to make an effort to keep attending yoga, my mindfulness doesn't just have to stem from that. It will also be meditation at home, focusing more on my relationships, and even staying present when I cook and eat. My goal is to try to stay as mindful as possible in all areas of my life as I finish out my senior year so that I am not focusing on my mistakes of the past or the indefinite future. Sometimes being mindful is hard. Sometimes, I wake up in the morning super tired with no energy to get out of bed. But then I feel that extra motivation, that inspiration of all the incredible people who push them selves that extra mile in a race or work-out and I think to myself that I can do it too. And we all can. It all comes down to the power of the mind, an entity I will harness and improve through this next year. Happy New Year Everyone.
What's your New Years resolution?
I am so happy it is winter break! This first semester has been so much fun and I cannot believe it is almost over. Although senior year is a lot of work it has definitely been my favorite because I every class I picked was based on my enjoyment, not meeting some requirement because that is what colleges like. I picked the classes I thought would be most challenging and interesting to me and that is what I got! It is hard work, but the material I am grasping is so fascinating, especially economics. I love how applicable economics is to the real world. Oh and sidenote, if you ever need an easy refresher on econ, I would highly recommend Charles Wheelan's book "Naked Economics". It is fabulous and his examples teach you everything you need to understand with clarity and not ONE single graph!
Anyways, although I am super excited to spend the break with my family, laughing, cooking healthy food, and exercising, I still have a lot of work to do! For psychology, I have to do an experiment on classical conditioning. I am not going to ruin the secret quite yet of how I am going to do it, but I'll post the link to my youtube video later so you can check it out! It is going to take the whole two weeks for sure! And then for my creative writing class I have to finish my portfolio, which is a lot of work, but at the same time it is exciting because I really love that class and the common thread I found in my writing~ family. And for statistics, I have to do a book report (I am reading "How to Lie With Statistics"; I'll give a review once I finish). And besides all of that work, of course I have to study thoroughly for my upcoming finals. But it doesn't bother me too much because this is really my last round of serious finals. And when I walk out the door of the last final on Thursday, I think I will be able to feel a sense of ease that my hard work and dedication to school truly paid off.
And then I can truly look forward to my second semester where my schedule is going to be a bit different! I am going to be taking Humanities instead of creative writing, which discusses Eastern philosophy. And since I am not doing a sport this semester I am going to be in my first EVER gym class. And of course, last but not least, I am going to be doing an independent study on Wellness!!! It will be in perfect union with this website so you will probably see some up and coming posts that stemmed from that class.
Anyways, as I write this post I am sitting on the balcony of my hotel in Naples and the view is spectacular. The ocean is calm, the sun is shining a glorious temperature of 80 degrees and there's a slight breeze. Of course I am soaking up my vitamin D as much as I can and later we are heading out for some golf. Yep, I think my break has started off pretty nice. Hopefully I'll get another post in before Christmas, if not (and if you celebrate) have a great Christmas!
Okay, it might be a little late, but I felt like reflecting on some things that I am thankful for in my life right now. Also I wanted to share how I spent my thanksgiving because it was a super awesome meal and vacation this year!
